BBC to anonymise job applications in social diversity bid

Names and universities to be hidden, to help candidates from under-represented groups make it through to interviews

The BBC is to remove names and universities from job applications as part of a bid to increase social diversity among its workforce.

The steps are part of a package of changes aimed at helping candidates from underrepresented groups make it through to interviews.

Studies have suggested that prospective applicants can be disadvantaged in job hunts by their names, in particular those that indicate someone is not from a white British background. The removal of names mirrors moves by universities admissions body Ucas to introduce “name-blind” applications from 2017 to tackle “unconscious bias”.

It’s been nearly 18 years since Wilmer Valderrama was introduced to America as the ethnically ambiguous foreign exchange student Fez on Fox’s “That ‘70s Show.” In that time the actor says he’s seen some progress when it comes to diversity on television but he feels networks could be doing more.

The 36-year-old star spoke to The Huffington Post this week about wanting the TV industry to go beyond developing diverse pilots and how it felt to work with the cast of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” during his recent guest appearance as patient Kyle Diaz.
